How’s this for a story?

I’ve been a writer for most of my life. I’ve also been a radio host and a professor,  I have a weekly podcast, and I run a writing group. Sounds pretty busy, right? Oh, and I have two kids and a dog. Let me take you back to 2017. I had moved to a rural area with a lower cost of living so I could devote more time to creativity. Low cost of living doesn’t mean free. I still needed an income, and that ended up meaning a full-time job running a retail store and doing interior design. That didn’t leave a whole lot of time or energy to write. OK, honestly, that’s a total understatement. Let’s be honest: I was heading straight towards full-on burnout. I was exhausted, frustrated, moody, and couldn’t concentrate on anything. My friends and family started to notice. My energy was way off. But even worse, I stopped writing every day.

   I couldn’t continue like that. I knew I needed to revisit my strategy. Writing and storytelling are my passion. Though I loved the shop and the design work, those were things I had planned on doing mostly for the money, but they were taking up most of my time. Not to mention, they weren’t making me that much money. And they were taking up time and energy that could be better spent writing.

We all need to make money. But when your work is meant to fuel your passion but ends up burning you out instead, that’s not sustainable.

So this is what I did: I examined everything I was doing, and I saw a trend. I love to write, but I also love to share information with others. Basically, I like to teach. I’m willing to bet that, if you’re a writer, not only are you a born storyteller, but you’re a born teacher as well, whether you have as much experience in it as I do, or not. I decided that online courses might be the solution to my problems.

    I got super excited. At last I had a plan. I built Spalmorum, my online platform for writers, and started to develop my first online course, “From Aspiring Writer to Successful Author.” And man, was it hard! Despite all the research I did, feeling my way through the process took way more time and effort than I had thought it would. I spent thousands of hours Googling everything under the sun and buying online courses and piecing together disparate pieces of information, but you know what?

Most, if not all, tutorials and courses on course building are aimed at people who are more business oriented and less… shall I say… creative than I am!

   However, the hard work paid off. I got my course off the ground. I now have an evergreen product that can make me money and also support my writing and my author platform for years to come. It’s a win-win.
